Transfemoral & knee disarticulation

Above-knee prosthetics

Above-knee (transfemoral) and through-knee prostheses have more parts to get right: the socket, the knee, the foot and how they line up. Maegan works through each with you so you can walk with more confidence.

Maegan calls you back personally, usually within one business day.

This can help if you have

  • A recent above-knee or through-knee amputation
  • Hip or groin discomfort from your socket
  • Trouble on slopes, stairs or uneven ground
  • Questions about microprocessor knees
  • A worn prosthesis or knee that needs replacing

Socket

Common designs include ischial containment and sub-ischial sockets, worn with a liner and suction or a pin. The aim is a secure fit that is still comfortable when you sit.

Knees

The knee is chosen around your activity, safety and goals:

  • Mechanical knees with stance control, often used by new or lower-activity walkers
  • Hydraulic knees that adjust to your walking speed
  • Microprocessor knees that respond to stumbles, slopes and stairs, where funding allows

Alignment and walking

Small alignment changes make a big difference above the knee. Fittings include walking with you, adjusting and checking again. We can work with your physiotherapist so training and adjustments line up.

Frequently asked questions

Will funding cover a microprocessor knee?+
Sometimes. Funders such as the NDIS and DVA look at whether it is reasonable and necessary for your goals and safety, and may ask for a trial. We provide the assessment and quote they need, and give you an honest view of the likely outcome.
Is a through-knee prosthesis different?+
Yes. A through-knee (knee disarticulation) limb can often take weight on the end, but there is less room for the knee joint. Knee choice and knee height need extra planning.
Can you work with my physio or rehab team?+
Yes. With your consent we share fitting notes and goals with your physiotherapist, doctor or rehab team.
